ROCK HILL, S.C. — 2016 Marshall County alum Abby Fiessinger became the sixth Carson-Newman softball player to receive the South Atlantic Conference’s highest academic honor. Fiessinger was named this year’s Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Fiessinger entered the Lady Marshals softball roster as a seventh-grader under Coach Patricia Greer and started six seasons setting several records including Highest Season Batting Average, Highest On-Base percentage, Most Hits in a Season, Most Doubles in a Season, and Most RBI’s in a Season. In 2014 and 2015, she was selected to the All-Region Teams. Fiessinger was named the 2015 Region One Player of the Year and in 2013, 2014, and 2015 received defense and offense awards as a member of the Junior West All-Star Team.

She continued to reach records and earn honors as a Lady Eagle at Carson-Newman, a Division II school, until she faced another senior season, this senior season, her unfinished season, the year of the COVID19 pandemic.

Her freshman year as a Lady Eagle, Fiessinger was named D2CCA All-America, D2CCA All-Region First Team, NFCA All-Region Second Team, and All-SAC Honorable Mention. As a sophomore, she earned SAC All-Tournament Team, NFCA All-Region First Team, All-SAC First Team, and All-SAC Tournament Team.

Last season, her junior year, Fiessinger finished the regular season with .442 average and the season with .424 earning her the SAC’s regular season batting champion. She was two-time SAC Player of the Week, two-time TSWA Player of the Week, All-SAC First Team, SAC All-Tournament Team, Google Cloud CoSIDA Academic All-District, D2CCA Southeast Region Player of the Year, D2CCA All-American Honorable Mention, NFCA All-America Second Team, and Fast Pitch News All-American Honorable Mention.

As a senior, Fiessinger was named to the NFCA National Player of the Year Watch List. The Lady Eagles had played four conference games mid-way through their season before it was cancelled. With 24 remaining games in the 42 regular season schedule, Fiessinger was fourth on Carson-Newman’s home run list.
