Dear Editor,

According to UNICEF (United Nations Children's Fund), there are 153 million orphaned children worldwide and 5,700 new orphans are added to this number each day. In the United States, there are more than 400,000 children in foster care; in Kentucky, there are approximately 8,000 children in foster care.

These staggering numbers don't count the 20,000 expectant parents who make an adoption plan for their child each year. The bottom line is, children need our help.

As the parent of five children whom I adopted, and the founder of Adoption Assistance, a non-profit, Kentucky and Tennessee licensed child placing agency, I have a passion for assisting children in finding loving homes. For the last 20 years, we have assisted women and men wanting to place their child for adoption, children needing a forever family and prospective adoptive parents willing to grow their family through adoption.

Adoption is a beautiful way to lift a child up to a better life. Once we begin to realize we are all in one world and by working together we can improve the lives of our children, we will, in fact, change the world.

Sincerely,

Julie Erwin
