Maxwell D. Sledd, 90, died on Sunday, Nov. 24, 2019 at his Decatur residence. He was born June 20, 1929, in Kentucky to Henry Lee and Cora Lee Sledd.

Sledd graduated from Benton High School, Belmont College in Nashville, Tennessee and Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville as a Master of Divinity.

After pastoring four Baptist Churches in Kentucky and Tennessee, Sledd and his wife, Betty, served 31 Years in Nigeria as missionaries with the International Mission Board (IMB) of the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC). After retirement, he served for a year as an interim pastor of his home church, Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Gilbertsville. Max was commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel for his foreign missions service.

He is fondly remembered for his love of Kentucky Wildcats basketball, his wit and his unique sense of humor.

Sledd is preceded by his firstborn, Gary Dwain Sledd; his parents and eight siblings.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Jean Sanders, of Decatur, Alabama; son James Sledd (Annette) of Huntsville, Alabama; daughters Gloria Carusi (Frank) and Nancy Spahalski (Bernie); daughter-in-law Rose Marie Chessen (Garry); sister Nona Mae Duncan; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the IMB-SBC for their Nigeria Missions work, or to the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
