Veterans transportation to Marion, Ill. resumes

  • 1 min to read

American Legion Post 73 will resume van service for veterans in Calloway, Marshall and Graves counties to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Marion, Illinois, beginning July 21.

Post 73 Service Officer Mark Kennedy said the resumption of the van service is tentative due to ongoing COVID-19 concerns.

“We will only be permitted to have one patient ride in the van each Tuesday and that patient must wear a face mask while in the van and while at the VA Hospital,” Kennedy said. He also said the patient will be asked three questions:

• Have you experienced a new cough, fever, or shortness of breath recently?

• Have you experienced a loss of taste or smell recently?

• Have you been exposed to anyone with the COVID-19 in the last couple of weeks?

Kennedy emphasized that the resumption of the van service will be an exercise in abundant caution concerning Legion 73 drivers, van passengers and VA Medical Center staff.

“We want to exercise due diligence and ensure that we are following (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and other health agency guidelines before we go full-throttle and resume full van service like we provided before the onset of the pandemic,” Kennedy said. “We ask for our van riders to be patient as we resume service and understand that we are required to proceed in this manner.”
