A Calloway County man alleged to have assaulted a Marshall County woman before kidnapping her baby, stealing her vehicle and her cell phone, was captured by the Calloway County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) the same day as the manhunt began.

Ryan K. Schoppe, 29, of Calloway County, is facing a number of charges in both Marshall and Calloway counties from two separate warrants. In Marshall County, he is charged with burglary 1st degree, a Class B felony; kidnapping, a Class B felony; theft by unlawful taking (more than $500) a Class D felony; theft by unlawful taking (more than $10,000 but less than $1 million), a Class C felony; assault 4th degree, a Class A misdemeanor. In Calloway County, Schoppe is charged with strangulation 1st degree, a Class C felony and assault 4th degree (domestic violence), a Class A misdemeanor.

On Jan. 9, the Marshall County Sheriff's Office (MCSO) issued an alert to the community requesting assistance in locating Schoppe, who was described as "armed and dangerous." According to police, earlier that morning he forced his way into the home of a 28-year-old woman and once inside, assaulted her before kidnapping her 5-month-old child who police say he believes he fathered. He also reportedly stole her cell phone and 2008 Buick Enclave.

MCSO Detective Captain Matt Hilbrecht said Schoppe later left the kidnapped child with family members in Calloway County, who contacted law enforcement, but left again in the stolen vehicle before officers arrived.

A short time after inciting the public's assistance in locating Schoppe, police found the stolen SUV abandoned in Calloway County. Not long afterward, Hilbrecht said officers with the CCSO located and arrested Schoppe and served him with the warrant from Marshall County as well as an outstanding warrant in Calloway County.

Kentucky State Police also assisted in the investigation.

Schoppe was arraigned in Calloway District Court Jan. 13. As off press time, the date of his pending appearance for arraignment in Marshall District Court was unavailable.
