Attempted robbery leads to Beaver Dam man's arrest

An attempted robbery of a Calvert City man resulted in the arrest of a man from Beaver Dam Wednesday.

Kentucky State Police troopers from Post 1 and Marshall County deputies responded around 12:30 p.m. to a residence on Lone Valley Road after a report of an attempted robbery, according to a news release from KSP. The initial investigation showed that Douglas A. Key, 54 of Beaver Dam, made contact with a resident on Lone Valley Road, and stated that he was with the Paducah Sun newspaper and wanted to write an article on the homeowner's business.

When Key arrived at the residence and made contact with the homeowner, Key drew a handgun on the homeowner. As Key demanded the homeowner bind his hands with zip ties, the handgun discharged, nearly striking the resident. After the homeowner bound his hands, Key attempted to bind his feet as well, but a struggle took place. The homeowner was able to disarm Key and gained control of the situation before calling 911.

Key was taken from the scene to Mercy Health - Lourdes Hospital in Paducah for treatment of injuries. After being released from the hospital, he was arrested and lodged in the Marshall County Detention Center. He was charged with First-Degree Robbery (Class B Felony); Kidnapping - Adult (Class B Felony); Fourth-Degree Assault, Minor Injury (Class A Misdemeanor); First-Degree Wanton Endangerment (Class D Felony); and First-Degree Burglary (Class B Felony).

The investigation continues by Trooper William Propes. Kentucky State Police was assisted on scene by the Marshall County Sheriff's Office and Marshall County EMS.
