Marshall County’s Marshals soccer team took a 2-0 record into this second week of action after scoring 3-0 victories over Paducah Tilghman and Murray last week.

Coach Andy Pagel praised his team for their hard-nosed play and readiness in the two victories.

“They did play tough,” Pagel said. “The guys came out and they were ready.”

In the second match, at Murray, Pagel said the Marshals opened the game with extraordinary focus.

“We played out the first half, especially the first 20 or 25 minutes, just like I was playing a video game,” he said.

THIS WEEK: The Marshals were scheduled to open the week Monday at Mayfield. Today, they are at home against Graves County, and on Thursday, they travel to Murray to meet Calloway County.

MURRAY – The Marshals shut down the Tigers in a contentious match Thursday night at the Mallary France Soccer Complex field.

Each team saw two players receive yellow cards in the physical contest.

Caleb McNeely opened the scoring in the 25th minute and David Penney made it 2-0 later in the period.

McNeely appeared to have scored again in the final two minutes of the first half. The ball hit the crossbar and appeared to go into the goal before rolling back out, but officials ruled it was not a goal.

In the second period, McNeely had two more goals nullified by penalties assessed against Murray, effectively making the fouls work to Murray’s advantage.

Nathan Solomon got the third goal for the Marshals early in the second period.

In posting his second shutout, Marshals keeper Levi Darnall had four saves as the Tigers managed only six shots, compared to 18, 12 on goal, for Marshall County.
