The Lady Marshals volleyball team is off to a 5-2 start to the season.

Coach Dan Langhi’s team scored two wins at home and then went 3-2 in the Apollo Summer Slam tournament in Owensboro Friday and Saturday.

The season opener was a big victory. The Lady Marshals defeated Ballard Memorial 3-1 on Aug. 18, winning two sets after Ballard forged a 1-1 tie with a 25-15 thumping in the second set.

The Lady Marshals were down 24-18 in the fourth set, but scored six straight points, including three consecutive aces by senior Cassie Alberico and three kills by sophomore hitter Hannah Langhi, to win the game and the match.

Ballard rebounded from a 25-9 whipping in the opening set to tie the match. Marshall County eked out a 25-23 win to go up 2-1 and set up the finish in the fourth set.

“I think they [his players] want me to have to increase my blood pressure medicine,” Langhi quipped after the victory.

He praised the Lady Bombers as a tough opponent.

“They have a good team every year,” he said. “We want to be competitive every year.”

The victory avenged a loss in last year’s Region 1 tournament.

That was the third of three defeats suffered last season by Marshall County at the hands of the Lady Bombers.

This win, in fact, was the first victory for the Lady Marshals over Ballard since Aug. 11, 2012, when Marshall County took a 25-18, 25-23 win in a tournament in Owensboro.

Ballard won both regular-season matches between the two teams that year and followed that up with a sweep of three matches last year.

Using that victory as a springboard, the Lady Marshals went on the next night to win at home against Hickman County by a 3-0 score (25-19, 27-25, 25-15) Aug. 19.

In the Summer Slam, the Lady Marshals lost to Edmonson County 2-0 (25-23, 25-19) and Daviess County 2-0 (5-18, 25-19) on Friday, then defeated McLean County 2-0 (25-16, 25-11), Madisonville-North Hopkins 2-1 (23-25, 25-18, 15-12) and Caldwell County 2-0 (25-22, 25-15) on Saturday.

CCA brought a 2-1 record into this week after falling to Graves County on Aug. 18 and then posting wins over Paducah Tilghman at home and at St. Mary.n Christian Fellowship opened its season with a win at Paducah Tilghman Thursday.

The Lady Eagles took a 3-0 decision, winning 25-21, 25-17 and 25-15).
