The Marshall County Chamber of Commerce is making preparations to host a candidate forum on Sept. 25 at the new Children’s Art Center in Benton.

Chamber Executive Administrator Debbie Buchanan said the committee responsible for coordinating the event is currently drafting a letter to invite candidates of the November general election to participate.

Buchanan hopes that candidates running for state senate, state representative, judge executive and county commissioners from Districts 1 and 3 will attend.

The committee recently decided to solicit questions for the candidates from members of the community, and will ask for submissions in the coming months.

Questions should specify to whom the question is directed and what to ask, and may be submitted through Facebook, email or at the monthly chamber breakfast.

Buchanan and a committee will consider each question submitted and select six or seven questions per candidate.

Candidates will not have the opportunity to read or view questions beforehand.

The questions will be placed in a glass bowl and read by the moderator. Each candidate will have two minutes to answer followed by an opportunity for rebuttal.

A moderator has been chosen but the chamber is not yet ready to release that person’s identity.

Buchanan did say the committee chose a moderator who is not local because they wanted an “unbiased outsider to ask questions and keep peace” during the forum.
