Martha Anna Gregory Elkins, 99, died Wednesday, June 18, at her home in Oxford, Mississippi, under the care of Camellia Hospice.

The funeral service was held Monday, June 23 at 2 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church. Rev. John Semmes officiated. Burial followed in Oxford Memorial Cemetery.

She was born in 1915 in Hickman to the late Louis and Genoa Smith Gregory. Martha was an Oxford resident since 1960, when she and her family moved from Benton. She graduated from Murray State University, Murray with a Bachelor of Arts in Voice in 1935.

Always active in the community, Martha sang in the choir of the First Presbyterian Church, served as chair of the Oxford Pilgrimage and as president of the Oxford Garden Club, where she was a Distinguished Gardener. Distressed by college students dying in automobile accidents during runs to Marshall County, not to mention loss of local tax revenues, Martha was instrumental in lobbying for the legalization of the sale of liquor in Oxford. As a yellow dog democrat, she proudly wore her donkey pin every election season and hoped to live to see Hillary Clinton elected the first female president of the United States.

An avid Ole Miss football fan, Martha helped to nurture the team during the 1962 undefeated season with numerous dinners around her kitchen table at Fiddler’s Folly, and hosted the wedding reception of quarterback Glynn Griffing and his wife Nikki.

Ms. Elkins’s husband, James Howard Elkins, also a musician, died in 1980.

Her survivors include a daughter, a visual artist, Laura Elkins and her husband, John of Washington, D.C.; a son, an attorney, Stephen Elkins and his wife, Elizabeth of Baltimore, Maryland, and four grandchildren, Allbriton and Adele Robbins and Meredith and Gregory Elkins.

Memorial contributions in Martha Elkins’s memory may be made to the Oxford Garden Club, c/o Ms. Christy Knapp, Treasurer, 1409 Greenway Cove, Oxford, MS 38655.s
