MURRAY – A trio of Mashall County errors led to a pair of Graves County runs, and those first-inning runs were all the Lady Eagles needed.
Graves won 3-1 at Calloway County on May 27 to advance to the championship of the First Region softball tournament.
Lady Marshals starter Toni Fehrenbach-er gave up only three hits and reliever Briana Gibbs only one. Neither surrendered an earned run.
But the two unearned runs in the first frame, and another unearned run Graves tacked on in the third, ended the season for Marshall County.
“Our defense let us down in one inning,” coach Kara Hamby said. “And then we just couldn’t get our bats going.”
The Lady Marshals managed only two hits, both of them coming from freshman Lexee Miller.
In addition to the two singles, Miller drew a first-inning walk and scored the Lady Marshals’ only run. She scored on Chaney Stearns’ ground-out.
The first three batters drew free passes from Lady Eagles starter Casey Wade, but the senior hurler settled down after that and struck out two Mashall batters to preserve a 2-1 lead.
After that shaky start, though, Wade was solid. She gave up on the two singles to Miller, walked one more and hit two batters. Only two baserunners made it as far as second base.
The loss wrapped up the season for the Lady Marshals, champions of District 4, with a 20-16 record.
The game was the third close contest between Graves and Marshall this season. The Lady Marshals won 14-13 in a come-from-behind victory over Graves in the Marshall County Slugfest on March 21 while Graves took a 9-8 victory in Mayfield on May 9.
That triggered a three-game losing skid, two of the losses by a single run, as Marshall County finished the regular season with only one win in their last four games.
But they rebounded with a strong showing in the district tournament, in which they had a first-round bye by virtue of their perfect season in district play and then defeated Calloway County 10-4 for the title.
“It was a great season,” Hamby said. “We really came together as a team.”
Graves went on to lose the region title game to McCracken County.

MURRAY – In the opening round of the region tournament, the Lady Marshals whipped Paducah Tilghman behind a no-hit pitching performance by senior Toni Fehrenbacher.
Fehrenbacher was also 2-for-4, with a pair of doubles.
Lexee Miller and Caitlyn York also smacked doubles for MC.
Tilghman got its two runs in the fourth inning off a walk and two Marshall County errors.
