GILBERTSVILLE – Muhlenberg County’s Chase Geary and Cameron Brooks took first place in the KHSAA Bass Fishing State Championship Friday and Saturday on Kentucky Lake.
They came from fifth place after the first day to win the championship with a second-day catch of 17 pounds, 15 ounces, while Friday’s leaders, Mason Shelton and Drake Oliver of Trigg County, managed only 10 pounds, 32 ounces.
The Trigg duo had boated five fish weighing 18-9 on the first day of the tourney, which was held out of Kentucky Dam Village Marina.
Geary and Brooks finished with a total of 10 fish weighing 33-6 to top Shelton and Oliver’s 32-3. Nathan Camp and Brandon Falwell of Calloway County took third with 30-7.
Calloway won the title in last year’s, as the KHSAA added bass fishing to its roster of sport-activities.
Last year’s tourney was also held on Kentucky Lake, with Kenlake Marina in Aurora as its base.
On Saturday, Muhlenberg and Calloway had two more teams in the top five, with Jacob Bowles and Hunter Hamption of the Mustangs weighing 28-14 to edge the Lakers’ Jared Phillips and Nick Procter at 28-6.
Peyton Porter and Shane Barrett led the three-team Marshall County contingent, finishing 12th with a catch of 15-6.
Adam Fitch and Bailey Napier took 18th with 10-8 and Austin Wade and Barrett Washburn were 26th with 6-15.
Forty-six boats competed in the tournament.
