GILBERTSVILLE – Forty-six teams are set to compete in the second annual KHSAA Bass Fishing State Championship Friday and Saturday.

The tournament will be staged out of Kentucky Dam Marina.

Anglers qualified in four regional tournaments on April 8-9. According to the KHSAA, 185 teams competed in the regionals, an increase of 76 percent over last year’s first season for bass fishing as a KHSAA-sanctioned sport-activity.

Region 1 champions Douglas Colson and Zach Colbert of Trigg County led all competitors in regional competition, catching five fish at a total weight of 20 pounds, 11 ounces at Lake Barkley.

Their winning weight was a mere one ounce more than the runner-up team of Cameron Brooks and Chase Geary of Muhlenberg County.

Other region champs and their catches included Michael Sandusky and Michael Shelton of Washington County, who weighed 7-13 to win Region 2; Corey Frye and Andrew Ford of Southwestern, 15-8, Region 3; and Trent Arrowood and Conner Ratliff, Johnson Central, 3-13.

The Region 1 tourney was held out of Kuttawa Harbor Marina. Other sites were Region 2, Herrington Lake, Chimney Rock Ramp, Harrosburg; Region 3, Lake Cumberland, Conley Bottom Marina, Monticello; and Region 4, Cave Run Lake, Cave Run Marina, Morehead.

Bracken Robinson and Dillon Starks of Calloway County won last year’s inaugural state championship on Kentucky Lake out of Kenlake Marina. They caught the maximum 10 fish, five on each day of the two-day event, for a weight of 34-4 to EDGE Zach Warner and Ridge Porter of Muhlenberg County with 32-7. Austin Turner and Lucas Powell of South Laurel took third place with 31-3.

Three Marshall County teams qualified for the state tournament. Peyton Porter and Shane Barrett were fifth in the region tourney with five fish weighing 17-11. Adam Fitch and Bailey Napier placed seventh with a 16-13 catch and Austin Wade and Barrett Washburn were eighth at 14-5.

Charles Jones of Jackson, Tenn., won Saturday’s LBL Division tournament in Walmart Bass Fishing League competition.

Benton’s Gerald Andrews took fifth place, following Jones, Ronnie Smith of Walton, Kenneth McGar of Crofton and Zach Grounds of Fortville, Ind. The tournament was based at Kenlake Marina in Aurora.

Jones had a five-bass catch weighing 19 pounds, 13 ounces. He won $7,642.

The next four finishers were all in the 16-pound range.

Saturday’s tournament was the second of five scheduled this year in the LBL Division. Brent Anderson was the winner of the first tourney on March 1. The next event will be May 17, again out of Kenlake Marina.
