DRAFFENVILLE – A large field of athletes braved damp and chilly conditions in Saturday’s 16th annual Invitational of the South track and field meet at Carroll Traylor Stadium.
Skyler Van Meter and Kaylin Spiker had first-place finishes to lead Marshall County’s effort, which yielded a second-place showing by the Lady Marshals and a sixth-place finish for the Marshals.
Both boys and girls competition featured 20 teams from Kentucky, Tennessee, Illinois and Missouri.
The Marshals also won the boys 4x800 relay on a damp and chilly day.
“I felt like we did very well despite the weather conditions,” MC coach Cory Westerfield said.
“When you host a meet, you sometimes get so covered up with making sure everything is covered that you don’t realize how your own team has done. After I looked at the results, I noticed that our times were not great, but neither were anybody else’s.”
Van Meter won the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 6 inches, while Spiker took the discus with a 95-foot, 7-inch throw.
The Lady Marshals were second to Clarksville (Tenn.) Northeast in team standings, while the Marshals were sixth as Mount Vernon, Ill., took top honors among the boys.
Earlier in the week, on March 24, the Marshals and Lady Marshals swept top honors in the McCracken County Quad Meet. The girls won seven individual and relay events while the boys had six first-place finishes.
“That was our third meet in six days which isn’t our normal way of going about things, but we use a lot of weekday meets as more of a way to condition the athletes,” Westerfield said.
THIS WEEK: Marshall County is one of 11 teams that have pre-registered for Saturday’s 4th annual High School Racer Relays Saturday at Marshall Gage Track inside Stewart Stadium.
Field events will begin at 10 a.m. with running events starting at noon. Admission is $2 for students and $5 for adults.
After that, the team will be idle until April 19 in the Bro. Borgia Invitational at St. Xavier High School in Louisville.
Two more home meets are scheduled, including the Twilight Relays on April 25 and the Area 1 Championship on May 2.
