MURRAY – Marshall County overcame a slow start and two early fouls on 6-7 senior center Austin Rentfrow to beat a determined St. Mary squad in the final first-round game of the tournament Saturday night.
Rentfrow went to the bench with his second foul less than three minutes into the physical conteset and the Vikings took a 5-4 lead on the two free throws by McCall Overstreet. St. Mary held a 16-12 advantage at the end of the quarter.
But Rentfrow returned at the start of the second period and played the rest of the way without picking up another foul until only 1:39 remained in the game. He led a balanced Marshal attack with 16 points and also had a game-high nine rebounds.
D.J. Pigg added 13 points, hitting all three of his 3-point efforts and all four free-throw opportunities. Mason Wooten and Collin Travis added 11 points apiece.
Wes Averill scored 22 for the Vikings and Patrick Hubert had 19.
The Marshals took the lead on a 6-0 spurt just past the midway point of the second quarter. Rentfrow had a two-handed slam dunk to cut the lead to 22-21, Wooten scored on a driving jumper from the right baseline to put Marshall County ahead 23-22 at the 3:05 mark, and then Rentfrow took a back-side lob over the Viking defense for another basket that made it 25-22.
Marshall County led the rest of the way, building the lead to as much as 15 points at 57-42 with 3:30 to play. That came on another dunk by Rentfrow and a 3-point jumper by Landon Taylor.
St. Mary fought back to a 61-55 deficit, getting six free throws by Hubert, two by Averill and a 3-point bucket by Overstreet in an 11-4 run.
But Taylor hit a free throw and Pigg sank all four of his chances to offset a basket by Hubert and two more free throws by Averill to close out the win.
The Marshals shot a red-hot 59 percent from the floor and 58 percent from behind the arc.
It marked the third victory for Marshall County in three meetings between the two teams this year. St. Mary closes the season with a 21-11 record.
