MURRAY – The winter storm that blasted through the region beginning Sunday caused a major adjustment in the First Region high school basketball tournament this week.

The tourney will start two days late, but a compressed schedule will allow it to conclude on schedule on Tuesday, March 11, if the effects of the storm do not linger and cause further adjustments to be necessary.

A top priority is getting the girls tournament completed by Monday at the latest. The state Sweet Sixteen opens Wednesday, March 12, at E.A. Diddle Arena on the Western Kentucky University campus in Bowling Green.

Two nights of opening-round games for girls teams were compressed into a single day’s schedule on Wednesday. Marshall County’s game against Ballard Memorial, which was to have opened the tourney on Monday evening, has been moved to Wednesday at 4:30 p.m.

Other games are on tap for 6, 7:30 and 9 o’clock.

Semifinal games for the girls have been moved back one day, from Friday to Saturday. The championship, originally slated for Saturday at 7 p.m., has been moved to Sunday, with a starting time to be determined.

The bracket for the boys has been less dramatically affected, with two nights of first-round games moved from Wednesday and Thursday to Thursday and Friday.

Marshall County will meet St. Mary in the last of the first-round games at 7:45 p.m. Friday.

The semifinals, if no further changes in the tourney schedule are necessary, will be on Monday and the championship is set for Tuesday, March 11, at 7 p.m.

All games are scheduled to be held at Murray State’s CFSB Center.

If travel conditions continue to be hazardous and result in further adjustments, games could also be played in Racer Arena, the old MSU basketball facility and former site of the First Region tournament.

Some girls games in last year’s region tournament were held at Racer Arena because of scheduling conflicts at the CFSB Center.
