OWENSBORO – Eight Marshall County swimmers advanced from Friday’s prelminaries to the championship round of the KHSAA Region 1 championships Saturday at Owensboro Health Park.

Two school records were broken during the weekend competition, which closes the season for the Marshal teams.

Those advancing to the finals included:

Seniors Austin Gordon, in the 100-yard backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay, and Grant Park, in the 200 individual medley, 100 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Junior Paul Hudson, in the 50 freestyle, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

Freshman Isaac Bayer, in the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay.

The girls 200 medley relay, 200 freestyle relay, and 400 freestyle relay also advanced. Team members included senior Allie Pearson; her sister, seventh grader Alicia Miller; sophomore, Karson Johnson; and seventh grader Madelyn Travis.

Top individual finishes in prelims included Gordon’s 12th place in the 100 backstroke and 13th place in the 100 freestyle and Park’s 12th place in the 100 freestyle and 16th in the 200 individual medley.

Hudson took 16th place in the 50 freestyle.

Top relay finishes in prelims included seventh by the boys 200 medley relay and ninth in the 400 freestyle relay.

The girls scored a 12th in the 200 freestyle and were 16th in the 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay events.

The top 16 from each event advanced to Saturday’s finals. Individual placings on Saturday included Gordon’s 12th in the 100 backstroke and Park’s 12th in the 100 freestyle. The two seniors also had a pair of 14th-place finishes, Gordon in the 100 freestyle and Park in the 200 individual medley.

The girls were 12th in the 200 freestyle, 15th in the 400 freestyle and 16th in the 200 medley relay events.

Park broke his own record from this year in the 200 individual medley, swimming a 2:20.06 in Saturday’s finals, and Hudson, Bayer, Gordon and Park shattered the 400 freestyle school record from 2012, clocking a 3-minute, 47.97 time to better the previous mark by almost 10 seconds.

Hudson, Gordon and Park were part of that 2012 team, along with David O’Rear.

Friday’s finals put Marshall County in 20th place in team standings with 32 points. The Marshall boys placed 19th with 16 points, with Gordon and Park accounting for 8 points each.

The girls were 18th with 16 points, all scored in the relay events.
