Tourist Commission selects company for rebranding study

The Marshall County Tourism Commission met Monday and voted to hire Chandlerthinks, of Nashville, a marketing company with expertise in branding, for a comprehensive study of tourism-related offerings in Marshall County.

Tourism Commission Director Randy Newcomb said the process of gathering information and conducting interviews of community and business leaders could be underway as early as mid-March. The study will take between 10 and 12 months to complete and will include the completion of a comprehensive audit of tourist-related offerings available in the county.

Funding for the study will come from the Fiscal Court, the cities of Benton, Hardin and Calvert City, the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce and the Economic Development Council.

A total of $23,000 has been pledged since last October, the latest coming at last week’s meeting of the Calvert City Council in the amount of $4,000.

The Marshall County Tourism Commission voted to fund one third of the total $54,250 of the study, with an $18,000 commitment.

Newcomb said he hopes to bring in representatives of Chandlerthinks to make a presentation on the process of the study to the funding partners in the coming weeks.

“They will do a complete audit of what we have and don’t have and find out what people both inside and outside the county think of us,” Newcomb said. “ We know what we think, but we don’t know what others think.”

Chandlerthinks performed a similar rebranding effort for Bowling Green in 2012 which resulted in a marketing effort called “Geared for Fun.” which played off the National Corvette Museum and Corvette plant, both located there.
