The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department arrested 26 year-old Kyle Brandon of Gilbertsville on Friday in connection with a fire last week at Wyatt Family Hydro Farms on Moors Camp Highway.

Police say they received a tip with information pointing them to Brandon, who was a former employee of Wyatt’s. Sheriff’s deputies followed up on the tip and found enough evidence to charge Brandon with arson, 2nd degree, for the fire that destroyed an estimated 80 percent of the farm’s lettuce and tomato crops, along with a backhoe and tractor.

Wyatt Farms supplies produce to a number of school systems across the state and operate year-round out of greenhouses. While investigators believe the fire initially started in the boiler room of an equipment building, sprinkler systems set off by the blaze killed plants in adjacent greenhouses.

Matt Wyatt told WPSD last week his business was not insured and that they will likely have to start over.

Marshall County Sheriff Kevin Byars said Det. Dan Malone continues to investigate the case and additional charges are expected.

Brandon is being held in the Marshall County Detention Center, with bond set at $25,000.
