Dr. George C. Clark died Tuesday, January 7 at the Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

He was born June 1, 1926 in Marshall County, son of George G. and Helen A. Clark. Mr. Clark graduated from Benton High School. After high school, he worked in a manufacturing plant in Detroit, Mich. and then was drafted into the U.S. Army near the end of World War II.

After the war ended, he attended Union University in Jackson, Tenn. and obtained a B.A. degree. Next, he attended Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville and obtained a M.A. degree in Theology. He also met and married Mildred (Mimi) A. Timmerman at the same seminary. They moved to Murray, where he taught English at Brewer’s High School and pastored at Hardin Baptist Church. Later, they moved to Nashville, Tenn. where he obtained a Ph.D. degree at Peabody College (now part of Vanderbilt University). He taught at Peabody College and Belmont University for several years while pastoring at several churches in Middle Tennessee. In 1961, they moved to Jackson, Tenn. and he started teaching English at Union University, continuing for 31 years. He served as head of the English Department for much of that time, and he also pastored at several Baptist churches in West Tennessee: First Baptist (Mercer), Sanford Hill (Henderson), East Laurel (Madison County), and Cloverport (Hardeman County).

Survivors include his wife, Mimi; his sons, Mark Timothy Clark (wife, Gayle) and Paul E. Clark of Jackson, Tenn., and his brother, Eugene G. Clark (wife, Julia) of White Plains, Md.

The family requests any memorials be directed to the Union University Scholarship Fund, 1050 Union University Drive, Jackson, TN 38305.

Funeral services were held at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, January 11 in the chapel of Lawrence-Sorensen Funeral Home. Dr. John Adams and Rev. Bill Williamson officiated. Entombment followed in Highland Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
