METROPOLIS, Ill. – Marshall County saw a double-figures lead melt away and had to come from behind to defeat Massac County 48-46 Saturday afternoon, snapping a two-game losing streak and improving to 10-2.

For Massac County, it was the second loss of the season to Marshall County but their first defeat at home this season. Marshall County won 53-41 in a Dec. 5 Hoop Fest matchup between the interstate rivals.

Bailey Greer led the winners with 11 points. Gracyn McBride and Emily Hoard led all scorers with 17 and 15 points, respectively, for Massac.

After leading by 10 at halftime, the Lady Marshals found themselves down 34-33 at the third quarter stop. The Lady Patriots stretched the lead to 43-36 midway in the fourth period.

Marshall County fought back from that deficit, drawing to within a point at 43-42 on two free throws by Alyssa Barnard and again at 45-44 on a basket by Hannah Langhi.

They regained the lead at just under a minute to play on two more free throws by Barnard which made it 46-45. They hung on for the win, with each team making half of its free-throw chances the rest of the way.

McBride deliberately missed the second of two shots with 6.4 seconds left in the hope of a Massac rebound and tying basket, but Marshall County got the rebound.

Free throws were a problem for the Lady Marshals, who hit only 16 of 28 chances, a 57 percent rate.

THIS WEEK: The Lady Marshals take on McLean County today at 7 p.m. at Reed Conder Gymnasium ahead of their Friday visit to Calloway County, the first game of a girls-boys double-header with a 6 p.m. tipoff.

On Saturday, they play Goreville, Ill., in the Mustang Madness tournament at McCracken County. Game time is 9 a.m.
