James D. “Jim” Cothran, 69, of Gilbertsville, passed away at 10:32 a.m. Friday, January 3 at Marshall County Hospital.

Jim was a retired school administrator with the Marshall County Board of Education. He was a member of Benton First United Methodist Church, the Marshall County Retired Teachers’ Association, Briensburg Masonic Lodge #401, the Marshall County Ramp Ministry, the Maple Springs Cemetery Board and the East Marshall Fire Department Board. In addition to being an avid golfer, Jim was a first responder with the United Methodist Church’s Disaster Relief Group. He was a Kentucky Colonel and Kentucky Admiral.

He is survived by his wife Sara K. Byars Cothran of Gilbertsville; his two daughters, Cheryl Graham and her husband Andy of Murray and Cindy Cothran and her partner Joey Gray of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; his son, Matt Cothran and his fiancée Jennifer of Fulton; seven grandchildren, Morgan Graham, Andrea Graham, Ethan Graham, Aiden Cothran, Seth Cothran, Allie Murphy and Madison Garland; one sister, Mary Lee Clark of Mayfield; five brothers, Don Cothran, Ray Cothran and Robert Cothran all of Benton, Sherman Cothran of Louisville and Roy Cothran of Murray; and several nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Guy Earl Cothran and Mary Magdalene Murray Cothran; and three brothers, Earl Glenn Cothran, Arthur Jackson Cothran and William Andrew “Bill” Cothran.

Funeral services were held at 1:00 p.m. on Monday, January 6 at the Benton First United Methodist Church. Rev. Mark Stephens officiated, and burial followed in the Maple Springs Cemetery.
