Marshall County’s Marshals and Lady Marshals head for the Gulf Coast this week for another appearance in the Marlin Christmas Classic basketball tournament at J.R. Arnold High School in Panama City Beach, Fla.

It will be the fifth time in the tourney for coach Gus Gillespie’s Marshals, who have an 8-4 record and one championship title, in 2008.

This will be the second appearance in the tourney for the Lady Marshals, who won the title in 2010 in the first year girls games were added to the schedule.

The Marshall County girls have a 3-3 record in two trips to a tournament at Fort Walton Beach, Fla., giving them a 6-3 mark in Florida Christmas tournament play through the past decade.

Pool play begins on Friday with the Lady Marshals playing the host Arnold Lady Marlins at 3 p.m. in the last of three girls games.

On Saturday, the Lady Marshals play Houston Memorial at 3 p.m.

Other teams competing in pool play include Pleasant Grove, Ala., and two Florida schools, Pensacola and Mosley of Lynn Haven.

The Marshals open pool play against Walton of Marietta, Ga., at 5 p.m. in the second of three boys games.

On Saturday, the Marshals meet Houston Memorial at 5 p.m.

Other boys teams competing in pool play include Trinity Catholic of Ocala, Fla., North Greene of Greeneville, Tenn., and the host Arnold Marlins.

Championship play will be on Monday based on seedings from pool play. The girls fifth-place game will be at 10 a.m., third-place game at 1:30 p.m. and championship at 5 p.m.

In boys action, the fifth-place game will be at 11:30 a.m., third-place game at 3 p.m. and championship at 6:30 p.m.

Last year, the Lady Marshals were unbeaten in six games in a pair of holiday tournaments, including the St. Francis Merv Lopes Hoops Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii.

They also won two games in the Dairy Queen Classic in Owensboro.

The Marshals were 2-1 in each of two tournaments last year, including the Marlin Classic and the T.J. Samson Community Hospital Holiday Classic in Glasgow.

Regular-season play for both the Marshals and Lady Marshals resumes on Jan. 3 in a Fourth District double-header at Murray.

The girls play at 6 p.m. and the boys at 7:30.
