Press Release

Members of the board of directors of West Kentucky Rural Electric Cooperative welcomed community leaders recently for a ribbon-cutting ceremony that signified the official opening of their new headquarters building in Mayfield, Ky. The new facility is located on West Broadway directly behind the location that has served as headquarters for the electric cooperative since 1952.

“Today we are here to fulfill a dream that started in our cooperative as early as 1988,” said President & CEO David Smart as he addressed the crowd. “So many people have worked tirelessly to make this dream a reality.”

Members of the Board of Directors then cut the ceremonial ribbon to open the 25,000+ sq ft facility, which houses more than 40 employees who make up the cooperative’s billing, member services, accounting and engineering departments as well as cooperative management and dispatch center.

“Our focus in designing this new building was to streamline our operating efficiency while increasing the level of service we can provide for our member-owners,” said Smart.

To that end, the building’s two most prominent features were designed with member-owners in mind. The facility proudly houses the West Kentucky Community Room, a 140-capacity multi-use space with an industrial size kitchen that is perfect for civic organization meetings and community events. Members who are interested in reserving the space for their event are encouraged to call the cooperative for information.

As well, the new headquarters features a new 24-hour state-of-the-art dispatch center for power outage management. The dispatch center, which is located underground for safety and consistency during natural disasters, houses various technologies allowing the cooperative to closely monitor its infrastructure and equipment. Additionally, the building features a two-lane drive-thru for more convenient payment options and a scenic pond and lighted walking track which will be available to the community as an additional recreational facility in the area.

To that end, the cooperative assured ribbon-cutting attendees that rates would not be increased to pay for construction of the new building.

Open houses for members will be held in the spring. In the meantime, operating hours in the Mayfield office will remain Monday-Friday 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
