Exhilarating travels up hill and down dale dominated the voting by readers in balloting for the fall sports Tribby awards, with Marshall County’s new mountain bike racing team and the cross country runners garnering top honors.

Carson Beckett, one of four individual state champions on the MCSH bike squad, and state cross country meet qualifier Vanessa Smith are winners of male and female athlete of the year, while running coach Chris Kerrick got the nod as coach of the year.

Establishment of the bike racing team got the nod as most noteworthy accomplishment, while the Marshals’ victories in three of four events in their debut in the Tennessee High School Cycling League was named as the most memorable game or match.

Brian Ramsey is head coach of the bike team, and Steve Beckett is assistant coach.

Beckett and the mountain bike team competed in the Tennessee league, an affiliate of the National Interscholastic Cycling Association, since Kentucky has no such organization.

Selection of candidates for fall sports Tribbys was done prior to the Nov. 17 Tennessee state championship meet in Gallatin, Tenn., where the Marshals won the team championship and four individual titles.

Beckett, a sophomore, won the Tennessee varsity championship, sweeping all four races in which he competed, as did junior varsity champion Hunter Dunnigan.

Justice Beal won the sophomore boys title and Jessica Tillson led a sweep of the top three spots in sophomore girls competition.

Beckett is also a member of the Marshals varsity basketball team.

Smith, a sophomore, had the top finish among Lady Marshals who ran in the state cross country meet Nov. 9 at the Lexington Horse Park. The team qualified by finishing fifth in the regional meet at Marshall County Nov. 2.

Jacob Carnine also qualified for the state cross country meet as veteran coach Kerrick added to the list of MCHS runners he has seen advance from the regionals.

Readers of the Tribune-Courier select winners in the Tribbys competition by submitting ballots over the three-week period.
