A new way to shop for groceries is coming to Benton, with Save-A-Lot planning a transition to Price Less IGA in the coming weeks. The store at 2602 Main Street will close its doors in mid-Oct. to reset, restock and rebrand before reopening in Nov. with a cost-plus shopping format.

Donnie Gipson, Regional Manager with Houchen’s Industries, said he believes the new store will better serve the shopping habits of the Marshall County customer.

“We will have more name-brand items, along with the IGA brand,” said Gipson. “Customers want to buy their favorite brands at the best prices and this seems like a better fit for our Marshall County shoppers.”

Gipson said the store’s concept will involve grocery items priced at cost on store shelves, with 10 percent added to the customer’s total bill at the register.

He said parent company Houchen’s Industries has 25 of the new-concept stores in locations across the country and is able to pass along savings to customers through bulk and truck-load buying.

The closure of the store for several weeks will allow staff to add new shelving, new freezers and an expanded frozen food line according to Gipson.

Gipson said the exact timing of the closing and reopening dates are currently tentative.

A job fair will be held Wednesday to hire about 50 additional employees for positions in store management, the meat and produce departments and customer service. Gipson said both full and part-time positions are available.

The job fair will be held at Save-A-Lot in Benton from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.

“In other areas where we’ve opened these stores, we’ve had a great deal of success with them and have had to greatly increase our workforce,” said Gipson. He said current Save-A-Lot employees will remain with the grocery, as well.
