Beckett leads Marshal with victory in club’s debut mountain bike race

TULLAHOMA, Tenn. – Carson Beckett won the varsity race Sunday in a Tennessee High School Cycling League race, the first competition for the league and for Marshall County’s cycling club.

Marshall County riders are competing in the start-up Tennessee league, as there is no sanctioning organization for high school mountain bike racing in Kentucky.

Beckett, however, is a veteran racer, having competed since he was 4 years old.

He won two gold medals in July in the USA National Championships in Macungle, Pa., and was featured in the Sports Illustrated for Kids magazine in 2011.

Marshall riders took two other victories Sunday, Hunter Dunagin won the boys junior varsity race and Jessica Tillson led a 1-2-3-4 sweep in the girls sophomore event.

Karson Grizzard was second, Jillian Farris third and Andrea Anderson fourth behind Tillson.

Other riders included Brock Costello, second in the boys sophomore event; and Travis Tack and Isaac Bayer, fourth and fifth in the freshman race.

Sunday’s event was sanctioned by the National Interscholastic Cycling Association. Marshall County was represented by 15 riders.

The event was held on the 1,000-acre Arnold Engineering Development Center, adjacent to Arnold Air Force Base.

The varsity race consisted of three laps around a six-mile course.

Other events on the schedule for the Tennessee league include the following:

n Oct. 6 at St. Andrews School in Suwanee;

n Oct. 27 at Herb Parsons Mountain Bike Trail, Memphis;

n and Nov. 4 at Lock 4 Mountain Bike Trail, Gallatin.
