A Marshall County grand jury convened last week and did not return an indictment against Jerry Elrod, 65, Gilbertsville, for the death of Matthew Bonds on June 30.
Elrod struck and killed Bonds who was walking along U.S. Hwy. 68 near McKenzie Park Subdivision. Elrod and his wife were delivering newspapers for The Paducah Sun when the accident occurred.
Elrod told police at the time he thought he had hit a deer. Elrod said he got out of his vehicle to see if the animal was still alive, but found nothing.
Detective Dan Melone said shoe tracks found in the grass showed Elrod had searched within 100 feet of where Bonds’ body was before leaving the scene.
Elrod told police he continued on to the Five Star in Draffenville to inspect damage to his vehicle, then finished the paper route. Elrod told police he had gone back to the scene about seven hours later, still looking for the deer.
Elrod learned from deputies with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department he had struck and killed Bonds the day after the incident.
