PADUCAH – Benton’s Patrick Newcomb claimed victory in the Rolling Hills Invitational tournament at Rolling Hlils Country Club Sunday.
Newcomb had rounds of 65 and 68 in the two-day, 36-hole tourney to defeat Mike Shelbourne by five strokes.
Shelbourne, with a card showing scores of 67-71=138, edged Chris Griffin, who shot 70-69=139, for the runner-up spot.
Newcomb is winner of two straight Kentucky Amateur titles, part of a whirlwind wrap-up to his collegiate career at Murray State University. He was named Ohio Valley Conference golfer of the year for the second time as a senior.
Newcomb will attempt to earn a second straight invitation to the U.S. Amateur later this year before turning pro.
n Hunter York of Hardin, a teammate of Newcomb’s at Marshall County High School and Murray State, won the Men’s Invitational tournament at Oaks Country Club in Murray Saturday and Sunday.
