DRAFFENVILLE – Shelbyville (Tenn.) Post 23 lost its first two games, but rallied to win three straight, including a 3-2, extra-inning triumph over Mayfield Post 26, to win the championship of the William A. Doyle Post 236 Senior Legion Tournament Sunday at Mike Miller Park.

The host team, Calvert City’s Post 236 team, won two and lost two in the tourney, falling to Shelbyville 12-3 in a semifinal matchup on Sunday.

Post 236 fell in the tourney opener on Thursday to Mayfield by an 8-1 score, but bounced back to defeat Shelbyville 3-1 on Friday morning.

The Calvert team won its second straight game, defeating Lyon County Post 68 6-3 in the first game of Sunday’s session.

Mayfield’s undefeated run through the tourney ended with the extra-inning run by Shelbyville that gave them the tourney title. Earlier, Post 26 beat Shelbyville 5-3 on Friday and recorded two wins over Lyon County, 7-3 on Saturday and 10-0 on Sunday.

The tournament provided the home opener for coach Billy Hodge’s Post 236 team, which traveled to Cape Girardeau, Mo., on June 11 for a double-header with the Post 63 team.

Cape took a pair of wins, the first by a 3-2 score and the second by 10-0, and the losing skid stretched to three when Post 236 faced Mayfield on Friday.

But righthander Shubert Moffatt turned in a three-hit performance against Shelbyville on Saturday to help get the team its first win.

Then, on Sunday morning, rangy lefthander Cody Gilbert turned in a stellar performance on the mound and smacked a two-run home run to lead the team to their second win of the season against Lyon County on Saturday morning.

Post 236 takes a 2-4 record into a double-header this afternoon at Henderson and returns home to Mike Miller Park on Wednesday for a twin bill involving both the senior and junior teams against Paducah Post 31. The senior team plays at 5:30 p.m.

The senior team travels to Eddyville to meet Post 68 on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. and travels to Santa Claus, Ind., for a Saturday double-header beginning at 1 p.m.

Cape 3, Titans 2

Post 63 won with two runs in the bottom of the seventh, spoiling a three-hit performance by the Titans’ pitching staff.

Starting pitcher Cody Gilbert singled and scored in the first to put Post 236 ahead.

After Post 63 tied it in the bottom of the second, the Titans regained the lead when Gilbert led off with a walk and came home on a single by Trey Martin.

In the seventh, the Titans’ third pitcher, Cameron Gudgell, walked leadoff hitter Wyatt Isom and then gave up a double to drive in Isom from first with the tying run.

Post 63 then loaded the bases with no outs. Gudgell was relieved by Kalen Parker, who induced a ground ball back to the mound.

Parker threw home for a putout, but catcher B.J. Elder’s throw to first hit the runner in the head. The ball caromed into right field, allowing Chase Eubank to score from second with the winning run.
