Mr. Woods was born May 13, 1934, in Brewers to the late Garland and Alene Creason Woods.
He graduated from Brewers High School in 1952, where he was a four-year member of the Red Men high school basketball team, leading his team with 56 points in a single game. His achievements are cited in the book, “A Winning Tradition.” He also was a member of the 1952 All Purchase team. He was awarded a basketball scholarship to Memphis State, but returned to his beloved Kentucky where he received a bachelor of science in Agriculture from Murray State University in 1956. He began his career at the Kentucky State Department of Agriculture as the Director of Insect Control Division from 1956-1960. He retired from Air Products in 1987 where he had worked as a Quality Control Chemical Supervisor. He remained involved in basketball as a KHSAA registered official from 1958 to 1975.
He was proud to be an Honorary Kentucky Colonel, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a charter member of Oaks Country Club, a Murray State University Agriculture Alumni Association Lifetime Member and a member of the Murray State University Alumni Association.
Mr. Woods was an avid Murray State University basketball fan and member of the Racer Foundation and Racer Club.
He was a member of Hardin Baptist Church. He was also owner of Brookwood Farms and Blue Bird Trial; his love of nature was his gift to his family.
Mr. Woods is survived by his wife, Mary Lou, of Brewers; two daughters, Lana Williams (Tripp) of Murray and Lawren Minor (John) of Memphis, Tenn.; three grandchildren, Sara Brooks Williams-Valenti (Michael) of Murray, James Frazier Williams IV of Granada HIlls, Calif., and Anna Brooks Robertson of Memphis, Tenn.; two stepsons, Gary Heater of Brewers and Mitch Heater of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and two step-grandsons, Ryan and Stewert.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a stillborn son, Gene David; his sister, Garlene Towery; and son-in-law, Alan Robertson.
Funeral services wereheld on Friday, June 7, at the Chapel of the Collier Funeral Home. Bro. Ricky Cunningham officiated.
Interment followed in the Brewers Cemetery.
