American Legion baseball, an American tradition since the 1920s, opens this week in Marshall County with the Post 236 Invitational Tournament for junior teams.

William A. Doyle Post 236 of Calvert City is the sponsor of Legion baseball locally.

The post plans to field a senior team for players ages 17-19.

The junior league is for players 17 and under. Post 236 will sponsor teams from Marshall County and Livingston Central high schools, enabling the Marshal and Cardinal programs to conduct a summer league to help players continue to develop their skills.

This week’s tournament includes the two Post 236 junior teams plus entrants from Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Belleville and Orient, Ill.

Friday’s schedule includes the following match-ups:

n Marshall vs. Livingston, 5 p.m., MCHS field

n Cape Girardeau vs. Belleville, 7 p.m., Mike Miller Park Field No. 4

n Marshall vs. Orient, 7:15, MCHS

Play continues Saturday with the following games:

n Livingston vs. Belleville, 2 p.m., Miller Park

n Orient vs. Cape Girardeau, 4:15 p.m., Miller Park

n Marshall vs. Belleville, 5 p.m., MCHS

n Orient vs. Livingston, 6:30 p.m., 6:30 p.m., Miller Park

n Marshall vs. Cape Girardeau, 7:15 p.m., MCHS

Two games wrap up the tourney on Sunday, both at Mike Miller Park.

Orient plays Belleville at 10 a.m. and Livingston plays Cape Girardeau at 12:30 p.m.

Tryouts were held during the weekend for the senior team. Players will practice this week and their first game will be June 11 at Cape Girardeau.

The home opener will be the weekend of June 14-15-16 in a round robin tourney at Miller Park.

Post 236 will take on Mayfield Post 26 in the opener at 3 p.m. June 14.

Other games that day include Mayfield vs. the Semo Strokers at 5:30 p.m. and Shelbyville (Tenn.) Post 23 vs. Post 236 at 7:45.

Four games are scheduled for June 15:

n Lyon County Post 68 vs. Semo Strokers, 10 a.m.

Lyon County vs. Post 236, 12:30 p.m.

n Semo vs. Shelbyville, 4 p.m.

n Mayfield vs. Shelbyville, 6:30 p.m.

Three games on June 16 will be played:

n Semo vs. Post 236, 11 a.m.

n Lyon County vs. Shelbyville, 1:30 p.m.

n Mayfield vs. Lyon County, 4 p.m.

The roster is a short one, largely because of the absence of most all players from Post 236’s base school.

One player from last season, 2013 graduate Chandler Foust, suffered a career-ending elbow injury during the high school season.

Devin Chambliss is the only Marshall County High School player to try out for the Calvert City senior team.

A 2013 MCHS graduate, the outfielder-pitcher will miss the first three weeks of the season because of knee surgery, coach Billy Hodge said.

Other returning players include:

n Cody Gilbert (OF-P), a 2013 Livingston Central graduate who has signed a scholarship to play baseball at Shawnee Community College in Ullin, Ill.

n Keegan Gillette (3B-P), Livingston Central

n B.J. Elder (C), Murray High

n Ryan Alderson (P), Murray

n Bryce Orr (3B-P), Calloway County

n Shubert Moffatt (2B-P), Heath

n Caleb Stonecipher (SS-P), Heath

n Coby Massey (OF), Heath

n Josh Rogers (OF-P), Lone Oak

n Tyler McManus (C-OF), Reidland

n Aaron Armstrong (C), Paducah Tilghman
