A four-team round robin softball tournament hosted by Marshall County’s Lady Marshals was fractured Saturday by weather-related cancelations, but the event turned into a high-quality double-header for the Lady Marshals against Region 1 powerhouses Reidland and Lone Oak.

Marshall County got a walk-off triple by Abby Fiessinger in a 4-3, eight-inning win over Reidland, but was dispatched by Lone Oak 10-0, the second time this year the Lady Flash have won by that score over Marshall County.

The Lady Marshals were scheduled to get one more shot at Lone Oak in a game at the Lady Flash field Monday afternoon to kick off the final week of regular season play.

Today, coach Kara Hamby’s team travels to Heath to meet the Lady Pirates at 6 p.m. and Christian County visits on Thursday for the finale.

Also last week, the 19-7 Lady Marshals, who completed a perfect 4-0 mark in District 4 play to lock up the top seed and first-round bye in the district tournament, which will be held May 22 at the Calloway County field in Murray.

Reidland and Marshall County were supposed to be joined by Massac County, Ill., and Lyon County, but those teams did not participate. Lone Oak accepted a late invitation to play.

The win Saturday was the second in 10 days for Marshall County over Reidland, which has a 23-5 overall mark and will almost certainly advance to the region tourney with 23-2 Lone Oak out of the District 2 tournament. The Lady Marshals scored a 4-0 win May 2 over the Lady Greyhounds at Reidland.

The second victory did not come nearly as easily. The two teams each scored two runs in the first inning, then settled in for six scoreless frames before Reidland pushed across a tie-breaking run in the extra frame.

Marshall County held the Lady Hounds to a single run, but in the bottom of the eighth, they found themselves down to the final out with the tying run on third.

Reidland pitcher Hannah Ridolfi issued an intentional walk to Marshall County senior Buzz Ray, putting the winning run on base.

That brought cleanup batter Fiessinger, a freshman slugger, to the plate. She pounded a 1-0 pitch deep to center field for what appeared to be her fifth home run of the year. The ball did not clear the fence, but it was good for an extra-base hit that drove in the tying and winning runs.

The Lady Hounds took a 2-0 lead in the first by showing patience against Lady Marshal pitcher Toni Fehrenbacher, who struggled early to throw strikes. But Fiessinger hit a double off the right-center wall, not far from where her game-winning hit would land in the eighth inning, to drive in Mallory Young and Ray and tie the game at 2-all.

A pitchers’ duel then commenced between Fehrenbacher, who settled into a groove, and Reidland starter Audrey Dodd. Both teams had scattered hits, but the pitchers and their defenses rose to each occasion.

Fiessinger’s two shots represented half of the Lady Marshals’ four base hits, with Young also hitting a double and Hailey Harrell getting a single.

Reidland also had four hits, with Ridolfi getting two and Chantell Driver also 2-for-4.
