Representatives from the Tennessee Valley Authority will be at Marshall Fiscal Court May 7 to respond to a request for a waiver of an easement fee.

Judge-Executive Mike Miller said the county made the request when the TVA sought a fee of $5,000 to consider an easement for a day use park at Big Bear. He added the TVA has made a counter-offer of $1,500 after Miller requested the waiver.

Miller said the county added several thousand dollars of improvements at the park and similar parks in the area. The original easement was dated March 14, 1986 and did not require the county to pay for the land’s usage. The county also provides maintenance and law enforcement in the day use parks.

Larry Whitt, county parks superintendent, said the TVA could present the county with additional fees as easements at other parks expire.

“With all the improvements we’ve made, I don’t understand why we would be asked to pay for someone else’s property we already maintain in good order.”

Fiscal Court meetings are open to the public. The next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at 9:30 a.m.
