PENSACOLA, Fla. – Spring break took a turn for the worse for a Benton Middle School student during the weekend.

Griffin Cavitt, 13, suffered injuries including a ruptured spleen in a head-on collision in Walton County, Fla., early Saturday morning.

“Right now, he is in the pediatric ICU with a ruptured spleen,” Lacey Cavitt said of her son Monday. “The doctor was in to see him, and planned to move him to a regular room” that afternoon.

She expected him to be able to begin eating solid food on Monday.

“Right now, it’s just a waiting game as far as surgery,” she said. “They are looking for new bleeding, but for right now, it looks pretty good.”

The mother said she was driving on Florida Highway 81, traveling behind a friend. The car she was following swerved to avoid an oncoming car that crossed the center line, she said, and the car Cavitt was driving collided with the other car.

A Florida Highway Patrol report identified the driver of the other vehicle as Gregory Scott McDonald, 43, of Westville, Fla. The report stated that McDonald “may have been having a medical event” when he became unconscious and crossed the center line.

Griffin was taken to Oskaloosa Medical Center and subsequently airlifted to Sacred Heart Hospital in Pensacola. Lacey Cavitt and her three other passengers did not require treatment.

Griffin may miss up to two weeks of school and faces another week in the hospital. He will be unable to participate in physical activities for six months.

Griffin has a Facebook page, and his family will be staying at the Ronald McDonald House at 5200 Bayou Blvd. Pensacola, FL 32503.
