On the heels of the January announcement by Marshall County Hospital CEO Kathy Long that she will retire effective June 30, the hospital’s board of directors has announced her replacement.

In a press release the hospital announced David Fuqua will take over as CEO effective July 1.

Fuqua, 51, is no stranger to the medical community of Marshall County, having previously served as CEO from 1995 until 1999. Since then he has led five other hospitals of varying sizes during his 20 years in health care administration. He currently serves as CEO of Massac Memorial Hospital in Metropolis, Ill.

“David Fuqua brings solid leadership experience in non-profit, critical access hospitals and has a wealth of knowledge in all facets of health care systems,” Marshall County Hospital Board chairman Dr. Paul Schaper said. “Mr. Fuqua has worked in a number of different positions such as radiologic technologist, a registered nurse, and department management until he began his administration career in 1995 at Marshall County Hospital.

“He has led five other hospitals of different sizes, as CEO, since Marshall County Hospital, gaining a great deal of experience. We are fortunate to be able to bring in a CEO with the experience that is so needed in the challenging times in healthcare we are now facing.”

“I am excited to be joining Marshall County Hospital and appreciate the Board offering me the opportunity to return to a place that has always had a special place in my heart,” Fuqua said. “These are trying times in health care and I look forward to continuing the direction that Ms. Long, the board, medical and hospital staff have begun.”

Fuqua received a master’s of health administration degree from the Medical College of Virginia in 1992, and served an administrative residency at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem, N.C.

Long has served at the hospital since October 1999. During her tenure there she oversaw the construction of the new hospital and medical office complex. She is quick to credit a team of people including employees, physicians, volunteers and the community for the progress of the hospital during her time there.

“It’s not about what I’ve done. It’s about what we have done,” said Long. “We are so blessed to have such a supportive group of people at Marshall County Hospital and a community that has rallied behind us.”

Long said she believes she is leaving the hospital in good hands with the announcement Fuqua will take over when she retires.

“David will bring experience and leadership to the table,” said Long. “His administrative skills, combined with the clinical experience he has is a good fit for Marshall County Hospital.”
