DRAFFENVILLE — Officers of the Marshall County Chamber of Commerce announced plans to offer more services for county businesses.

Chamber members met at a monthly breakfast on March 20. Dave Washburn, past-chairman, said the Chamber had evaluated its performance over the past year with the intention of making the chamber a service organization for the business community.

“We’ve re-written our bylaws to better represent our mission,” Washburn said. “‘Building for the future,’ is our new mission statement as that is what we do.”

Jeff Edwards, of the events committee, said events like golf and fishing tournaments needed a point of contact with the chamber to help plan and promote the event.

“It won’t hurt to have the chamber behind them,” Edwards said.

Jeff Smith of the welcoming committee said the county hurts from having a generational mindset when recognizing natives and newcomers.

“We want everyone to feel welcome, and need to welcome new residents and businesses,” Smith said. “We want to make them aware of our businesses and know what we have to offer without making them go elsewhere.”

Melissa Wynn, of the chamber’s marketing committee, said the chamber has a second mission. It cannot focus exclusively on recruiting new business. It must focus on existing businesses and members as well.

Billie Mason, of the finance committee, said she was working with members to identify what the chamber did well and areas for improvement.

“Economic development is planning to partner up with the chamber and is working to set up a committee to go after smaller businesses like Family Dollar and Sonic,” Wendy Baxter, of Marshall County Economic Development, said.

Washburn said the chamber is working on a new website to provide more information and events in Marshall County. It will also host websites for businesses that do not have money for their own.
