BENTON – When True Value Hardware closed last month in Benton after 52 years, Scotty and April Jaco saw an opportunity and they acted upon it.

“I thought Benton needed a good hardware store,” said Scotty Jaco. So he set in motion a plan to purchase the building at 411 E. 12th St. from former owners Verenda Johnson and Martha Davis.

He plans a March opening and recently resigned his position at Arkema in Calvert City to run the store.

Jaco said the store will be named Benton Hardware and will not be affiliated with a national chain. He said he’s taking the time between now the opening to give the store a facelift, doing some general remodeling.

Jaco said he will carry a complete line of plumbing and electrical supplies, tools and Valspar paint. In addition, he will offer delivery to contractors and the general public.

The store will be open seven days a week for homeowners doing weekend projects and in need of supplies.

He currently plans to be open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. on Sunday.

Jaco hopes to maintain the customer base of the True Value store and build upon it with competitive pricing and a wide selection of merchandise.

The former True Value store had been a Benton fixture since 1960.

It closed in November due to the retirement of its owners.
