Marshall County’s Brock Herndon has been accorded post-season honors in two sports, and fellow senior Jamie Gilland has been cited in football.

Herndon earned honorable mention All-State recognition in soccer and is the choice for punter by the West Kentucky Conference football coaches. Gilland got the nod at safety by the WKC.

Herndon anchored the defense of the Region 1 champion Marshals soccer team and was sometimes called on to move to a forward position as well. He tallied 13 goals, second only to Nathan Solomon’s 17.

He parlayed his soccer skillset into the job of punter and placekicker for the football team. He consistently delivered booming punts in the 35- to 45-yard range and kicked four field goals and 18 extra points, making him the team’s second-leading scorer with 28 points.

Gilland, with nine rushing touchdowns and two more on interception and kick returns, led the team with 68 points scored.

He scored six of his touchdowns in one game, a 300-yard effort against Calloway County. But as has been the case his entire career, injuries dogged Gilland and kept him off the field much of the season.

He missed Friday night’s state playoff game because of surgery last week to repair a damaged meniscus.

Gilland played well enough on defense to earn WKC honors at safety. He had 40 solo tackles, second only to Nolan Nichols’ 44.
