The Lady Marshals golf team qualified for the state tournament for the second straight year with a runner-up finish in the First Region tournament Monday at Murray Country Club.
Junior Devan Doss is scheduled to open state tourney play today at 11:30 a.m. at the Bowling Green Country Club course.
Doss will be followed off the first tee by senior Ashley McKenty, junior Charlyston Beard, freshman Bailey Tyree and sophomore Cayce Hendrickson.
“Our main goal is to win state,” first-year coach Vince Doom said. “But we have to be realistic and make it past the cut.”
The Lady Marshals missed the cut by just a few strokes last year.
“We want to get past that point,” Doom said.
Doom noted that in a comparison of all regional tournament scores, Marshall County finished in a tie for fifth.
“We want to build on that because that shows that we have a chance for a title or at least a great finish,” he said.
It’s the second year in a row that Marshall County has finished second to Calloway County in the regional.
Marshall County carded a team score of 330, nine strokes behind Calloway and medalist Anna Hack, who blistered the course with a five-under-par 67.
Hendrickson led the team with a 76, tying Paducah Tilghman’s Teri Doss for second place in individual standings. Doss won a one-hole playoff to decide the runner-up spot.
“I was very proud of the performance that the girls put on at regionals,” Doom said. “It was very surprising that we were so close to Calloway due to Anna’s performance and that we beat a good Graves County team by such a wide margin.”
