He was a member of Grand Rivers Missionary Baptist Church and Smithland Masonic Lodge #138. Mr. Howell was retired from Reed Crushed Stone where he worked as a drill foreman and blaster.
He was the son of Wallace Helen Ernestine Flannery Howell.
He is survived by daughters Rhonda Henson of Benton and Greathern Ann Howell of Grand Rivers; son Joseph “Joe” Ernest Howell of Grand Rivers; sisters Barbara Nell Harrell of Fairdealing, Janis Brown and Rebecca Smith of Grand Rivers and Juanita Rowland of Iuka; brothers Hubert Howell of Gilbertsville, Herbert Howell of Iuka, Alvin Lynn Howell of Oklahoma, Malcolm Howell of Benton and Dwight David Howell of Chattanooga, Tenn.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Sanders Howell; brother James Arland Howell; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral service will be Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at 1 p.m. in the chapel of Collier Funeral Home in Benton. Rev. Andrew Sexton and Rev. Mark Gill will officiate. Interment will follow in the Iuka Cemetery.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the funeral home.
