Mr. and Mrs. Talmadge Carmen Riley of Benton celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary on August 29, with a family gathering at their home.

The former Ruth Agnes Carter is the daughter of the late Ivan and May Crawford Carter of the Lynn Grove community in Calloway County. Mr. Riley is the son of the late Elzie Carmen and Clarencie Ivey Riley of Marshall County.

Mr. Riley served in the US Army, Company “B”, 612 Tank Destroyer Battalion during World War II. After being released from various German POW camps in 1945 he worked as a carpenter and farmer.

Mrs. Riley taught at one room schools in Marshall County and later retired after substitute teaching at Brewers.

While Mr. Riley was stationed in Texas, Miss Carter would come to visit him. The couple was united in marriage on August 29, 1942 in Palo Pinto, Texas by Rev. R.R. Willingham.

They have four children, Ronnye Riley, Dennis Riley, Darlene Riley Miller and Craig Riley. They have eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.
