DRAFFENVILLE – “They were and are winners. They were our heroes.”
That was the summation offered by Bill Morgan, himself a member of the Marshall County Athletic Hall of Fame, to the crowd assembled Thursday night for a ceremony inducting the Class of 2012 into the hall.
Enshrined were the 2002 Marshall County boys soccer team, which advanced to the championship game before falling to St. Xavier, and their coach, Don Walker, who was also inducted as one of seven individuals chosen by the selection committee of the Marshall County Athletic Foundation.
Athletes inducted included former MCHS standouts Stephanie Gossum, Lori Barrett and Aaron Beth, plus two basketball players from pre-consolidation days, John Padgett of Hardin High School and Van Mathis of Brewers High School.
Nominated for his work as a contributor to Marshall County athletics was Dennis Joseph, who has served 42 years as timekeeper for basketball and football at Marshall County and, before that school opened, at North Marshall High School.
Murray State Racers basketball coach Steve Prohm was guest speaker for the event, held at the Shadowen Performing Arts Center on the MCHS campus.
