Volunteers from five county fire departments, along with the U.S. Division of Forestry were back on the scene of the fire yesterday after finding hot spots that had flared up overnight off U.S. 641 in Gilbertsville.
The Division of Forestry was called in to dig a fire break around a heavily wooded two acre area near the fire. They say they feel confident the fire will not go outside the containment area and threaten any homes or businesses in the area, though they say the fire could burn for several days. Fueling the fire is debris from the 2009 ice storm.
Gilbertsville Fire Chief James M. Dexter had to be transported to the hospital after suffering symptoms of heat exhaustion. Temperatures soared to around 105 degrees, as fire fighters battled the fire.
On July 4 nearly 40 volunteers were on the scene of the fire and more than 20 remained last night.
Volunteers form Gilbertsville, Calvert City, Harvey-Brewers, ENO and East Marshall Fire Departments have been on the scene of the fire.
