By Jody Norwood Tribune-Courier News Editor jnorwood@tribunecourier.com DRAFFENVILLE – Marshall County’s 2012 Relay For Life is set kick off Friday night. The all-night event will return to Marshall County High School with opening ceremonies beginning at 6:30 p.m. Event chair Areia Hathcock said this year’s goal is $163,000, up from the 2010 record of $156,000. The event fell short of its goal last year with nearly $150,000. With economic conditions improving and new teams coming on board, Hathcock said things were progressing as the final week grew near. “We have several new teams this year and we are extremely excited to welcome them to our Relay family,” Hathcock said. “It takes a special kind of person to step up and volunteer to be a Relay For Life team captain and our hats are off to all of our team captains. Without them and their team members, Relay couldn’t be what it is today.” Children’s activities will begin at 5 p.m. this year and will close just before the Luminary Ceremony at 9 p.m. Hathcock said this will help ensure younger relayers are having fun while the parents are getting their sites set up. Three bands are scheduled to entertain throughout the night. Tony Logue, Hot Sauce and Amber Bass will begin sets after midnight. Hathcock said regular favorites like Relay Idol and Mister Relay Pageant will return this year. “We invite the whole community to join as we celebrate our survivors, remember those who have lost their battle, and fight back against this awful disease,” Hathcock said.
