Marshall County Sheriff deputies are continuing to investigate a Memorial Day crash on U.S. Hwy 95 that injured five.

According to reports, at 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to an injury accident near the Calvert City Drive In. Authorities believe Cory A. Burkeen, 24, of Gilbertsville, was traveling north on Hwy. 95 while Lake H. McGregor, 20, of Benton, was traveling south. Maggie K. Adams 19, a passenger with McGregor, advised that Burkeen swerved suddenly into the path of McGregor. McGregor swerved to try to avoid a collision but was unsuccessful and the vehicles collided head on.

Deputies say Burkeen had a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage on him and alcoholic beverage bottles were located next to the crash.

Burkeen was transported by Air Evac to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn., to be treated for injuries. McGregor and Adams were both taken by family members to the emergency room for their injuries.

Landon T. Lovett, 19, of Benton, and Shane D. McKenty, 20, of Benton, were also passengers McGregor's vehicle. Lovett was transported by Air Evac and McKenty was transported by PHI to Vanderbilt.

Reconstructionist Deputy Nathan Maxlow will be conducting the reconstruction of the collision.
