The new signal was installed after an extensive traffic study of the area indicated traffic volume at the site was creating access issues for traffic on Commerce Street.
The City of Benton requested the study due to increased traffic on Commerce Street. Highway engineers found that the volume of traffic on KY 348/West 5th Street created substantial delays for traffic turning out of Commerce Street and Judicial Drive onto KY 348.
Judicial Drive provides the entrance to the Marshall County Detention Center and Marshall County Sheriff's Office on the north leg of the intersection. Commerce Street is the south leg of the intersection where McDonald's and Heritage Bank generate substantial traffic.
Approximately 12,500 vehicles travel this section of KY 348/West 5th Street in an average day. KY 348 provides the east and west legs of the intersection.
The new signal is at mile point 8.040 on KY 348 between the Purchase Parkway Interchange and US 641/KY 58/South Main Street in Benton.
The new traffic signal is expected to go into flashing mode sometime on Friday to allow motorists time to become familiar with the location of this new traffic control device. The signal will become fully active and placed into regular green-yellow-red mode at about 10:00 a.m., CDT, on Monday, April 23rd. Signage will be erected around the intersection to alert motorists to the activation date.
Motorists should use appropriate caution and adjust driving habits to changes in traffic flow the new signal will create in the area.
