BENTON – Kent Barlow is scheduled to appear in Marshall County District Court this Wednesday for a preliminary hearing on charges of 1st degree rape, assault 4th degree, wanton endangerment 1st degree, terroristic threatening 1st degree and unlawful imprisonment.

Barlow pleaded not guilty to the charges last week during an arraignment hearing. He is being held in the Marshall County Detention Center on a $100,000 cash bond. District Judge Jack Telle refused Barlow’s attorney’s request last week to lower his bond so that he could enter an alcohol treatment program.

Also last week Marshall County Schools Superintendent Trent Lovett suspended Barlow from his employment as principal at South Marshall Middle pending the outcome of an internal investigation. He named Kem Cothran interim principal and said she would serve out the remainder of the school year at South, while also fulfilling a dual role as secondary supervisor at the school board office. Cothran has previously served as principal at South Marshall.

Lovett said Monday the school system’s internal investigation is continuing this week into the allegations against Barlow. He said he hopes to have completed interviews with those involved by the end of the week.

Kentucky State Police arrested Barlow and levied the charges against him on March 11 after a female visitor to his home told investigators she spent a terror-filled night after he became physically abusive when she refused to have sex with him.

The 46-year old female alleges Barlow held her at gunpoint with two different firearms, fired multiple shots onto the bed on which she was sitting and threatened both her life and his own on several occasions throughout the course of the night.

She told investigators with KSP she escaped the home and ran to one of Barlow’s neighbors on Soldier Creek Road in the early morning hours of March 11 after Barlow fell asleep, but not before being dragged inside by him by her hair after a previous attempt to escape.
