Being 33, I’m well beyond the milestones most of us wait for (16, 18 and 21) and staring down the ones many shy away from (40, 62 and for those Willard Scott fans, 100). The closer I get to them though, the more I notice those milestones are spaced further apart. Maybe because after a while you realize life isn’t marked by days on a calendar. It’s marked by the days you make it through.
Maybe it’s from all the years as a sports reporter or maybe because of the proximity of my birthday and Selection Sunday, but I tend to view life a lot like the NCAA basketball tournament.
You start off wondering how some of the teams made it in and, as things go along, you can only wonder how far they’ll go before burning out. You never know what’s going to happen from one game to the next, but there’s going to be some upsets. And no matter how well planned, the only sure thing is that your carefully prepared bracket is going to be busted. All you can do is hope your team makes it to the end.
I guess the good news is I’ve made it through the opening round. Hopefully, I can go through the second round without looking like UK trying to put away LSU.
