The girl’s basketball teams at Benton Middle School have ended their regular season. It was a very successful year for both the 7th and 8th grade BMS girls’ teams. Below is a recap of both the 7th and 8th grade BMS girls’ seasons, they are coached by Keith Bell and Laurice Mitchell.

The BMS 8th grade girls team ended their season with an overall record of 17 – 5. The 8th grade girl’s regular season district record was 7 – 1 where their lone loss was to Murray Middle. The District tournament set the backdrop for another match up with Murray Middle, if BMS could get by South Marshall Middle in the semi-finals. The South Marshall Middle girls had improved throughout the season and it wouldn’t be an easy game. BMS was able to prevail over South Marshall Middle by a score of 32 – 15.

This set up another match up between BMS and Murray Middle in the championship game. The championship game was played in an environment filled with enthusiasm by students, parents and the community. It was a great experience for the players as they prepare to transition to Marshall County High School. Unfortunately when the final horn sounded, it was Murray Middle who came away with a 35 – 32 victory. It was a game where BMS had several opportunities to take control of the game but Murray never gave up.

Even though the season ended on an unhappy note, the BMS 8th grade girl’s team had competed in every game and had improved since the beginning of the season.

Team members include: Kenslie Cross, Karson Johnson, Jansyn Van Pelt, Bailey Murphy, Lexee Miller, Briley English, Josey Powell, Payton Smothers, Kayla Emery, Marlee Henson, Sarah Thompson and Karissa Jordan.

==================================================================

The BMS 7th grade girls team had plenty to feel good about because they ended their season with a 22 – 1 record. Their regular season district record was 7 – 1 and the lone blemish in district play was a one point loss to Murray Middle 7th grade girl’s team early in the season. In the 7th grade district tournament, BMS won their first two games over Crittenden County and Calloway County setting up a match up with South Marshall Middle. In the championship game, South Marshall rose to the occasion and took early control of the game and led for the first three quarters. However, BMS rallied in the fourth quarter and overtook South Marshall by a score of 27 – 22 to become the 7th Grade Girls District champions. The team followed that up with a first place finish at the Snowball Shootout at Crittenden County the next weekend.

Team members include: Josey Powell, Briley English, Lexee Miller, Sarah Thompson, Payton Smothers, Marlee Henson, Karissa Jordan, Kori McColgan, Kayla Emery, Klein Johnson and Camryn Crass.

Anyone who has had a chance to watch BMS, South Marshall or North Marshall middle school girl’s teams this season has to be thinking that there are some exciting times ahead for Marshall County High School girls basketball in the next few years.

Coaches Katee Adams (North Marshall), Dan Langhi and Andy Carr (South Marshall) have worked very hard to improve the level of basketball being played at the middle school level. If these middle school girls continue to have a good work ethic to improve their basketball skills, there will be some exciting times for students and fans to watch over the next few years.
